rise,vb. 1. (Of a court) to adjourn finally at the end of a term. 2. (Of spectators and

participants in a courtroom) to stand when the judge enters or exits. 3. (Of a court) to take a recess

or temporary break, as at the end of a day. 4.Parliamentary law. (Of a special committee that has

exhausted its business) to dissolve and send a report to the referring body. • A committee’s rising is

equivalent to a deliberative assembly’s adjourning sine die. — Also termed rise and report. Cf.
