Fleet Prison.Hist. A large London jail best known for holding debtors and bankrupts in the

18th and 19th centuries. • Formerly standing beside the Fleet River, it was opened in 1197 and

operated almost continuously until it was closed and demolished in 1846.[Blacks Law 8th]
